PHCCIG Committee roundup: April – August

The PHCCIG committee continues to work hard to advance action on climate change. We are currently working with a much smaller committee, as founding members have taken much needed (short and long) leave. We are in the process of trying to attract new members and to amalgamate with organisations with similar values to increase our influence when advocating for climate change and environmental issues.

  • IT systems have been upgraded and revamped by Finn (committee member). We now have a new-look website and are using Discord as our internal communication platform, in addition to Facebook and Instagram.
  • PHCCIG supported Helen Lynnes (our previous Chair) in her submission to become a committee member of the executive at Conservation Council of WA. She has been elected to the CCWA executive and we congratulate her.

Meetings with politicians and others:

  • With the appointment of a new CEO for the Kalamunda City Council PHCCIG committee members have requested to meet with Anthony Vuleta to discuss climate change and local environmental issues.
  • Revocation of the tree retention policy: The committee wrote to all Kalamunda councillors regarding the revocation of the tree retention policy, requesting they have a proper review where they consult with community stakeholders and local groups and consider adopting the West Australian Local Government Area (WALGA) tree retention ideas.
  • Environment Advisory Group – Mundaring Shire Council: Committee members Lynda and Ailsa attended the first environment advisory group meeting at the Mundaring Shire Council offices. Items of interest were: strategising elements of risk due to climate change, buildings and infrastructure, the natural environment, community resilience, economy and governance. PHCCIG committee members can attend the meetings going forward as observers.
  • Natural disaster resilience event – Federal member for Hasluck, Tania Lawrence, conducted an event at Mundaring Arena. Lynda, Denise. Ailsa and Finn attended and many guest speakers gave information about improving resilience for residents in the face of increasing natural disasters.

Community engagement:

  • PHCCIG market stall: was held at the Farmers Market in Mundaring on 20 April 2024. The focus was climate change, State and Federal elections in 2025 and recruiting new members. It was staffed by members of the committee and several volunteers including Wesley from Nannas for Native Forests.
  • Picnic in the park: held at Sculpture Park in Mundaring in June with the aim of connecting with other like-minded groups in the local area. It was an enjoyable get together. Fourteen people attended including PHCCIG committee members and representatives from other organizations such as Nature Reserves Preservation Group, Parents for Climate Action Perth and Hills branches, Jane Brook Catchment Group, Nannas for Native Forests, Jarrah Friends, Extinction Rebellion – Grandparents, plus other locals. We were able to discuss common Interests and there was a lot of interest in the possibility of establishing a Community Independent candidate for the new seat of Bullwinkel, which is to replace part of Hasluck in the upcoming federal election.
  • Ongoing discussions with Steve Gates of NRPG for possible amalgamation of small groups in the local area with a view to increasing our collective action on climate and environment issues. He has met with Bayswater Environs which has a great model for possible use, so we will continue to pursue this possibility
